About Playa Las Peñas

Las Peñas is a small village and its beach on the coast of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, about 22 km west of Playa Azul and roughly 20 m above sea level. The 2020 census counted 254 residents in 69 occupied homes. The name, "the boulders", says it all: giant boulders line the shore, and people see figures in them. The famous ones are an ape, a crowned king and the profile of an Aztec emperor.

The beach itself is a narrow strip of golden sand facing open, restless water. This is not a swimming beach: the waves break hard and sharks have been reported, so stay out of the sea. People come instead to watch the surf from the rocks, photograph the formations, surf when conditions allow and spend the night, since there is a designated camping area. There is no real tourist infrastructure, so bring water, food and whatever you need to sleep.

A sailfish fishing tournament is held here in December, and the beach also hosts festivals with food, art shows, crafts for sale and traditional music. From November to March, humpback whale season on this coast, a few operators run two-day trips from Morelia that camp at Las Peñas and take visitors out by launch to look for whales, dolphins and turtles; sightings are never guaranteed.

How to get to Playa Las Peñas

Las Peñas lies on the coast west of Playa Azul, at about km 20 of coastal Federal Highway 200, on the stretch from La Mira toward Caleta de Campos: 30 min from Lázaro Cárdenas, 38 km by road, and 1 h 35 min from Zihuatanejo, 132 km by road. Without a car, take a long-distance bus to Lázaro Cárdenas (about 5 hours from Morelia), then the local bus that runs through La Mira toward Caleta de Campos, which passes Las Peñas and stops on the highway. Organised trips from Morelia take about 4 hours and stop for lunch in La Mira. The village has very few services and no petrol station, so stock up in Lázaro Cárdenas or La Mira. The US State Department's Mexico advisory places Michoacán at "Do Not Travel".
