    About Playa Puerto Angelito

    Puerto Angelito is a small, sheltered bay on the west side of Puerto Escondido, past the lighthouse and the stone walkway below it, in the Rinconada area of the town. The bay holds two short beaches separated by a low rocky outcrop: Playa Puerto Angelito on the west and Playa Manzanillo on the east, together only around 120 metres of sand. This part of Puerto Escondido belongs to the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec.

    Because the cove faces away from the open swell that pounds Zicatela, the water here is shallow and usually calm, shading from emerald green to turquoise. That makes it one of the town's favourite swimming beaches, especially for families. Puerto Angelito has a road down to it and is lined with palapa restaurants run by local families, so it fills up on weekends and holidays with Mexican families and day-trippers. Manzanillo, reached on foot over the rocks or by boat, has slightly more surf and a quieter feel, with a few restaurants whose loungers are free if you order something.

    The rocks between the two beaches are among the best snorkelling spots in Puerto Escondido, where sea turtles and stingrays are often seen. Snorkel gear can be rented on the beach. Boat tours from the Playa Principal pass the bay on their circuit of the western beaches, and water taxis link the bay with the main beach.

    How to get to Playa Puerto Angelito

    Drive from Oaxaca: 2 h 45 min, 191 km

    Puerto Angelito is about 5 minutes by car or taxi west of the Adoquín, the pedestrian street in central Puerto Escondido, down the Camino a Puerto Angelito from the Rinconada area. Colectivos on the main road charge a fixed in-town fare. You can also walk from the Playa Principal along the stone walkway under the lighthouse and on to the bay, or take a water taxi from the main beach.
