    About Playa Roca Blanca

    Playa Roca Blanca is a long, open Pacific beach near the village of Cacalote (Cacalotepec), in the municipality of Villa de Tututepec, about 40 km northwest of Puerto Escondido along Highway 200 toward Pinotepa Nacional. It takes its name from a rocky islet a short way offshore that looks white from the beach: hundreds of seabirds nest on it, and their guano coats the rock. It is not to be confused with the smaller Roca Blanca off Zipolite beach, further east.

    The beach is reached by a dirt road of about 2 km that leaves the highway at Cacalote and runs through woodland to the shore. At the end of the road a row of simple palapa restaurants with hammocks serves grilled fish, cold drinks and other basic food, and they also have toilets. Behind the beach lie small settlements, and a Christian mission base with a clinic and a Spanish school stands near the road.

    Roca Blanca is mainly a place for a lazy day on the sand. The surf is strong here, as on most of this open coast, so swimming needs care. During the week the beach is often almost empty, while on Sundays families from nearby Río Grande and from Puerto Escondido come for a meal in the palapas. Together with the Manialtepec lagoon, which lies on the same stretch of highway, it makes an easy day trip from Puerto Escondido.

    How to get to Playa Roca Blanca

    Drive from Oaxaca: 3 h 20 min, 229 km

    From Puerto Escondido, drive northwest on Highway 200 toward Pinotepa Nacional for about 40 km (roughly 30 to 45 minutes) to the village of Cacalote (Cacalotepec), around km 102. Turn off there toward the coast and follow about 2 km of dirt road through woodland to the beach; keep right where the road splits near the mission base. The dirt road is generally in good condition.
