About Villa de Arista

Villa de Arista is a plains town at 1,610 metres, an hour north of the city of San Luis Potosí, with 8,464 people at the 2020 census. Flat thorn scrub stretches all around, with the Sierra Las Pilas to the north. There are no rivers here; water comes from wells, and more than half of the working population lives off crops and livestock.

The area stayed nearly empty through the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1711 Juan Zeferino claimed a plot here that he called the Jagüey, after a watering pond; Antonio Reyna settled it with his ten sons, and it became the Jagüey de los Reyna. In 1840 the government shared out the land among the residents, who laid out streets, and the church was finished in 1857. That year a state decree made it a villa named Arista, after Mariano Arista, the San Luis Potosí general who led the Army of the North against the United States in 1847 and was president of Mexico from 1851 to 1853. The new name took a while to stick: in 1864 locals still called it San Cristóbal or Jagüey de los Reyna.

The municipality was abolished in 1946 and folded into Villa Hidalgo until the state congress restored it in 1972. The parish church, with its tower and dome, remains the building the town is proudest of. Local food means red enchiladas and, for something sweet, queso de tuna, a firm paste of prickly-pear fruit; mezcal and pulque are the drinks. The climate is semi-arid, with May highs above 40 °C and summer rains.
