San Diego Recoba

San Diego Recoba, also spelled Recova, is a junta auxiliar of the municipality of Hueyotlipan, about 3 km from the municipal seat. At the 2020 census it had 712 inhabitants (641 in 2010) and was the seventh largest of the municipality's 51 localities listed by Pueblos América. It sits at about 2,570 m above sea level in a temperate highland climate: a mean annual temperature of 13.3 °C, a record low of -4.6 °C and about 700 mm of rain. Farmland surrounds it and, a few kilometres away, rise Cerro Tlapexca (2,772 m) and Cerro San Lorenzo (2,752 m).

The village takes its name from the former Hacienda de Recova, also called Recova de San Diego, which the Hueyotlipan town hall lists among its historic monuments. It was built in the 18th and 19th centuries and its main body gives similar weight to the granary, the house and the chapel, with white plastered façades and stone-and-tepetate walls about 60 cm thick. It had a tinacal, machero, stable, calpanerías and corrals, since its business was farming and pulque; today it has several owners and an agricultural colony is being developed on its land. Hueyotlipan produced nearly 800,000 litres of pulque in 1932, a sign of how much maguey meant to the region.

The patron is San Diego de Alcalá, and the community's traditional fair takes place every year in November; in 2019 a news report described it with dance, theatre and music groups and a fair committee headed by local residents. There is no lodging in the village; the nearest is about 13 km to the east.
