About Domingo Arenas

Domingo Arenas is a locality in the municipality of Nanacamilpa de Mariano Arista, in western Tlaxcala, at 2,582 metres above sea level. According to the Pueblos América directory it has about 560 residents, making it the municipality's fifth largest locality, behind Ciudad de Nanacamilpa (13,401), San Felipe Hidalgo (1,861), Francisco I. Madero (1,352) and Miguel Lira y Ortega (906). It lies about 7 km (approx.) northeast of the centre of Nanacamilpa. It should not be confused with the other locality of the same name in Zacatelco.

Community life has its own features. In the barrio of Domingo Arenas the Virgin of Santa Cecilia is celebrated, and it is one of the municipality's two community presidencies, together with Miguel Lira y Ortega, whose authorities are chosen by customary practice (usos y costumbres) rather than by ballot; the term matches that of the town council.

The area's draw is the forest. Nanacamilpa shares the Firefly Sanctuary with Españita, where in June and July the oyamel firs light up as the insects mate; the San José ejido, with more than 700 families and 2,600 hectares of forest, created the Sendero de la Luciérnaga, and the Festival Nacional de la Luciérnaga has been held since 2014. The surroundings also have pulque maguey fields, and the municipality celebrates San José on 19 March in the so-called pulque fair.
