    About San Ildefonso Hueyotlipan

    San Ildefonso Hueyotlipan is the seat of the municipality of Hueyotlipan, in western Tlaxcala, at about 2,560 metres above sea level. The Nahuatl name is read as "on the great road" (huey, great; ohtli, road; ipan, on), because routes from Cholula, Huejotzingo and Texcoco met here. At the 2020 census the town had 5,910 residents and the municipality 15,190.

    The history Wikipedia tells is one of the frontier: Otomí settlements guarding the Tlaxcalan border, the prehispanic wall of which traces remain, and the passage of Cortés, who by that source was received here in July 1520 during his retreat from Tenochtitlan. The legend of that stay gave rise to the Señor del Convento, a crucifix carried down and back up on 1 and 31 July. Later it was hacienda pulque country; in 1932 the town produced 799,639 litres of pulque.

    The church of San Ildefonso was begun on 24 June 1678 and finished on 19 March 1682; INAFED describes a Mannerist facade with a round choir window, a tower decorated with angels holding the arms of the House of Austria, a timber-beam ceiling and an organ on the choir rail, unusual in Tlaxcala. INAH completed its restoration in 2023 after the 2017 earthquake damage. The patron festival is 23 January, or the following Sunday if it falls on a weekday, and starts on the 22nd. The municipality works burnished clay and engraved mole cazuelas.

    How to get to San Ildefonso Hueyotlipan

    Drive from San Martín Texmelucan: 30 min, 29 km

    Hueyotlipan is in western Tlaxcala, about four leagues from the capital according to Wikipedia, on the old Mexico–Tlaxcala–Veracruz road; today the federal Mexico–Veracruz highway crosses the municipality and INAFED places it 30 km from Calpulalpan on federal 136. The parish stands on Avenida Tlaxcala, on the main plaza. By car it is approx. 35 minutes from Tlaxco (about 29 km) and close to an hour from Puebla (about 50 km). The practical way is a bus to Tlaxcala, Apizaco or Calpulalpan and then asking for the colectivo or a taxi to Hueyotlipan.
