San Antonio Atotonilco

San Antonio Atotonilco is a locality in the municipality of Ixtacuixtla de Mariano Matamoros, in western Tlaxcala, at about 2,314 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census it had 4,656 residents, well up from 2,857 in 1990 and 4,162 in 2010. The name comes from Nahuatl: atl (water), totonilli (hot) and -co, "place of hot springs". Its patron saint is St Anthony of Padua.

The municipal encyclopedia notes that an ancient settlement once occupied the hill where San Antonio Atotonilco now stands. Around the village are low hills that can be climbed on a short walk: Loma La Retama, at 2,434 m, 0.8 km to the southwest, and Loma San Bernardo, at 2,409 m, 1 km to the northeast. Villa Mariano Matamoros, the municipality's largest locality, is about 10 km away in a straight line.

There are no hotels in the village; the closest, Hotel San Antonio, is 2 km away, and other hacienda hotels lie 8 or 9 km to the south. The feast of St Anthony of Padua, which the Catholic Church marks on 13 June, has no published local date. Elsewhere in the municipality the feast of St Philip the Apostle is held on 1 May and a three-day carnival in February.
