    About Guadalupe Zaragoza

    Guadalupe Zaragoza is a village in the municipality of Tlahuapan in western Puebla, on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It stands at about 2,450 m and had 3,050 people in 2020. Its name joins its patron, the Virgin of Guadalupe, with the surname of Ignacio Zaragoza, the general who defended Puebla against the French on 5 May 1862.

    The municipality of Tlahuapan, whose seat is Santa Rita Tlahuapan, lies in west-central Puebla on the borders of the State of Mexico and Tlaxcala. Its altitude, shaped by volcanic mountains, runs from 2,300 to 3,500 m. It borders San Salvador el Verde and San Matías Tlalancaleca, the Tlaxcala municipalities of Calpulalpan, Nanacamilpa, Sanctórum and Españita, and the State of Mexico municipalities of Tepetlaoxtoc, Texcoco, Ixtapaluca and Tlalmanalco. It lies in the basin of the Atoyac River, which rises near the Puebla–State of Mexico line.

    From above, the village sits among fields and forested slopes. Puebla's first vineyards were planted in Tlahuapan, and near Santa Rita stands the 1837 Puente del Emperador on the old royal road from Puebla to Mexico City.
