    About Chimalpa Tlalayote

    Both halves of the name come from Nahuatl: Chimalpa is read as "place of shields" or "upon the shields", and Tlalayote joins tlalli, earth, with ayotl, squash, meaning "little squash of the earth". It sits on the Llanos de Apan, the pulque plain of southern Hidalgo, at 2,490 metres and about 9 km southwest of the town of Apan. The ground is flat, the climate temperate and sub-humid with summer rain, and the water drains toward the Tochac and Tecocomulco lagoon.

    What puts Chimalpa on the map is its hacienda. A study from the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo counts it among the Apan haciendas famous for historic pulque production; today they are ex-haciendas that no longer sell pulque and employ far fewer people, mostly privately owned and run by foremen. The same text warns that visiting them needs advance permission from the owners or caretakers. Criterio Hidalgo places Chimalpa, with Tochatlaco, on a one-day route from Zempoala to Apan, and calls the maguey fields at sunset the most photographed sight.

    The 2020 census counts 2,694 people in 736 homes, 5.8% of the municipal population. Social lag is very low and marginalisation low. The hacienda is visited as a stop on a tour of the Apan haciendas.

    How to get to Chimalpa Tlalayote

    Drive from San Martín Texmelucan: 40 min, 51 km

    Chimalpa Tlalayote lies about 8.9 km southwest of Apan (Wikipedia), so the starting point is the town of Apan, 64 km from Pachuca. From Apan it is a short drive. Coming from Zempoala, Criterio Hidalgo reckons about 50 minutes to Apan on its haciendas route. From Mexico City the distance to Apan is about 92 km along the railway line, per Wikipedia; leave early if driving. The practical plan is to reach Apan and continue by taxi or your own car. Otumba, in the State of Mexico, is about 25 km away in a straight line and Tulancingo about 49 km. The hacienda is private, so let them know before you go.
