Mariano Matamoros

Mariano Matamoros, in Tlaxco municipality, Tlaxcala, is the largest of the communities around the ex-hacienda of Mazaquiáhuac: 924 residents at the 2020 census (479 women and 445 men), up from 812 in 2010, in 251 homes. It sits at 2,544 metres and 17.3 km in a straight line west of Tlaxco; among the municipality's settlements it ranks tenth by population. It should not be confused with Mariano Matamoros in Tamaulipas, or with Villa Mariano Matamoros, the seat of Ixtacuixtla, elsewhere in Tlaxcala.

Its surroundings are the former hacienda lands: when agrarian reform broke up the Mazaquiáhuac and El Rosario complex from 1939, ejidos named Matamoros were created, one of 1,641.95 hectares and another, Matamoros II, of 471.11. Close to the community there is also the settlement NCPE Mariano Matamoros Dos, with 9 residents. The ex-hacienda is 1.5 km to the northeast.

The church is the main sight. In the Commons photo it is a five-tier tower with a clock at the top and a bell, its balconies banded with stepped-fret patterns of Mesoamerican character; the same motif is picked out in white on the stone paving of the approach, and to the right of the churchyard is a small stepped platform in the manner of a pyramid. Around it the land is farmland and scrub, with cold winters.
