About San Lorenzo Soltepec
San Lorenzo Soltepec is a locality in the municipality of Tlaxco, in the western part of northern Tlaxcala, at 2,536 metres above sea level. Its patron is Lawrence of Rome, and Soltepec comes from Nahuatl: zollin (quail), tepetl (hill) and the locative ending -co, that is, "on the hill of the quails". Close by is another locality called ex hacienda San Lorenzo Soltepec, at 2,552 m, which INEGI counted at 6 inhabitants in 2005, and a Cerro Soltepec of 2,874 m about 3 km to the north.
The 2020 census recorded 1,169 residents. The historical series is uneven: 656 people in 1900, 878 in 1910, a fall to 449 in 1970 and a recovery to 627 in 1980 and 1,019 in 2010. Tlaxco is the largest municipality in the state, at about 577 km², and its 37 auxiliary presidencies are chosen by usos y costumbres.
The community's name also belongs to the bullfighting world: the San Lorenzo Soltepec fighting-bull ranch, with a tobacco, red and blue badge, was founded in 1941 by Reyes Huerta Velázquez and took cows and bulls from Coaxamaluca and Zacatepec. It first appeared at Mexico City's Plaza Monumental on 9 September 1956 and gave its first corrida at the Plaza México on 3 January 1971. The village church, with a clock tower and walls of stone and red brick, is what you see first from the road. In the municipality wooden furniture is made, and at the table mutton barbacoa, tenate cheese and natural pulque stand out.
