    About Cascada Bola de Oro

    The Cascada Bola de Oro is the waterfall closest to Coatepec, tucked into a fold of cloud forest on the north side of town. It is a modest fall rather than a dramatic one, but the setting is lovely: the water drops over dark rock into two pools, surrounded by ferns, mossy trees, and the coffee plantations that cover these hills.

    It shares its name with Bola de Oro, the Coatepec coffee brand known since 1910. If you want to pair the waterfall with coffee, the company's Finca Roma, founded in 1902, runs tours with walks through the plantations, a visit to its old processing plant, and a tasting.

    On your own, the walk out from the center is part of the fun, passing houses, small bridges, and coffee bushes before the path drops to the river. The water is very cold, so a swim is best on a warm afternoon.

    How to get to Cascada Bola de Oro

    Drive from Xalapa: 15 min, 14 km

    The falls are a short distance north of central Coatepec. On foot, head north from the center along Calle 5 de Mayo and follow the local streets to the trailhead by a bridge; the tourist office in Coatepec has maps and can point you the right way. A taxi can take you closer. The area has little supervision, so go in daylight and preferably not alone.
