    About Parque Ecológico Los Tecajetes

    Parque Los Tecajetes, also called Parque de los Tecajetes, is a park of about 4.5 hectares on Avenida Manuel Ávila Camacho at the corner of Victoria, roughly 1 km west of Xalapa's centre, about a 15-minute walk. It sits in a natural hollow, which has led people to compare it with Mexico City's Parque Hundido, and a freshwater spring rising beneath it feeds the channels, ponds and small aqueducts that run through the park.

    The name is usually traced to the Nahuatl word for a stone bowl, tecajete. Before the city grew around it, the area was mostly sandy ground with some fertile patches where vegetables were grown, watered by a stream known as the Chorro Poblano del Tecajete. Local accounts say the spring supplied Xalapa's first drinking-water network. The authorities later built a small zoo here, which operated for some years before the current park replaced it; in that rebuilding the flow of the spring was used to create fountains, bridges and winding paths.

    Today it is a green, shady place in the middle of the city, with tall trees, ferns and the dense vegetation of the cloud-forest belt Xalapa sits in. Fish, turtles and frogs live in the ponds, and migratory birds pass through in season. Paths wind down between the water features, and there are children's play areas, sports courts, a skating area, exercise spaces and an open-air forum used for performances, as well as picnic spots. Smoking and pets are not allowed.
