About El Grande
El Grande lies about five and a half kilometres southeast of Coatepec, at 1,071 metres above sea level. It belongs to the municipality of Coatepec, part of the Xalapa metropolitan area, and its name appears on the list of haciendas and processing estates that worked as productive farms around the town, alongside Mahuixtlán, Tuzamapa, Zimpizahua, Bola de Oro and Santa Fe: coffee land, like the rest of this corner of Veracruz.
The village's best-known landmark is its church dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Unlike many hamlets in the hills, El Grande is well connected: in 2020 four in five homes had a mobile phone and more than seven in ten had internet.
The population figures tell an odd story. There were already 638 people in 1900 and 704 in 1910, but in 1921, after the Revolution, the census recorded only 382. The count got back to about six hundred in the 1940s and has grown slowly ever since, to 955 in 2010 and 1,087 in 2020.
The easiest plan is to pair a stop here with Coatepec, the coffee Pueblo Mágico six minutes away by car, and with Xico, the neighbouring Pueblo Mágico.
How to get to El Grande
Drive from Xalapa: 20 min, 17 km
From central Coatepec, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, it is about 5.5 km and some 6 minutes: leave along Calle Libertad and follow the state road southeast to El Grande. From Xalapa it is about 17 km and 20 minutes: take Circuito Presidentes south, then the Xalapa–Coatepec road (VER 7) and, before reaching central Coatepec, the state road to El Grande. Long-distance buses (ADO and AU from TAPO in Mexico City, CAPU in Puebla or the ADO terminal in Veracruz port) arrive at CAXA in Xalapa; local transport runs on to Coatepec, but we found no published combi timetable to El Grande, so the last stretch is best done by taxi from Coatepec.
