About Chalmita

San Ambrosio Chalmita sits a little over a kilometre north-east of the Santuario de Chalma, in the municipality of Ocuilan, at about 1,786 m. It had 1,622 residents in 2020; the village grew from 675 people in 1970 to over 1,500 by 1990 and has barely changed since. Wikipedia reads the name as two Nahuatl words, challi and maitl, roughly "from the mouth to the hand".

Here people live beside the pilgrimage rather than inside it. The village keeps cobbled streets, vernacular houses and a former alcohol and spirits factory, and the municipal monograph says one of Ocuilan's largest archaeological zones lies within its land. Neighbours irrigate fields and fruit orchards with water from the Tlaxipehualco river, which starts higher up at a place called El Obraje.

What draws visitors lies about 4 km to the north along the pilgrims' road: the Ahuehuete de Chalma, at km 40 of the Santiago Tianguistenco–Chalma highway. It stands around 37 m tall, and water wells up among its roots and steps down through a row of small pools; pilgrims drink it, wet themselves in it and hang petitions on the branches. Sources disagree about its age (from 227 years to over 900). Its Nahuatl name means "old man of the water". The sanctuary of the Señor de Chalma, which has its own page here, is a short walk from Chalmita.
