About Chavarría

Chavarría is the fourth largest locality in Coatlán del Río, after the municipal seat, Cocoyotla and Michapa: the 2020 census counted 990 residents, slightly below the 1,004 of 2010 and above the 870 of 2005. There are 332 occupied homes, nearly all with electricity and piped water, and about one household in three owns a car. It sits at 1,166 m, roughly 4.5 km in a straight line from Coatlán del Río.

Its strength is its position. A photographic road log of the route shows federal highway 166, the road from Alpuyeca to the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, running through the village, so many drivers cross it without learning its name. Around it is a cluster of villages close together: Puente el Arenal is 1.2 km away, Tilancingo 1.9 km, Michapa 3 km and Cocoyotla about 3.7 km, where an unnumbered state road leaves toward Chalma and Tenancingo in the State of Mexico.

Chavarría has a rural health unit of the Morelos health services, whose referral hospital is in Tetecala. There are no formal tourist sights: what it offers is a roadside village in a dry, mild valley ringed by hills.

Chavarría lies on federal highway 166 (Alpuyeca to Grutas de Cacahuamilpa), so it is easy to reach. From Cuernavaca it is about 33 km in a straight line and roughly an hour by car (approx.): take the 95D toll road toward Acapulco to Alpuyeca, then stay on the 166 through Miacatlán, Mazatepec, Tetecala and Coatlán del Río. From Coatlán del Río, the municipal seat, it is about 4.5 km in a straight line. Wikipedia also lists a way from Cuernavaca through Puente de Ixtla and Michapa toward the caves.

By bus, Pullman de Morelos runs from central Cuernavaca to Coatlán del Río about every four hours, around 75 minutes (Rome2rio; check times). From Mexico City, take a bus to Cuernavaca at the Terminal Sur in Taxqueña. From Coatlán to Chavarría ask about colectivos or local taxis, as we found no published service. Xochitepec, the nearest pueblo in this guide, is about 19 km away in a straight line.
