Casahuatlán

The cazahuate tree gives Casahuatlán its name, from the Nahuatl casahuatl and tlan: "place where the cazahuate abounds". The village sits in the municipality of Amacuzac at 949 metres above sea level, and the 2020 census counted 1,915 people, making it the fourth largest of the municipality's 39 localities. Growth is recent: 74 people lived here in 1900, 540 in 1970 and 1,297 in 1990. In 2020 nearly four in ten residents had been born outside Morelos.

The Río Salado, one of the municipality's two main streams alongside the Amacuzac, runs past the village and neighbouring Coahuixtla. The large irrigation canal named for Casahuatlán belongs to a Morelos state water commission project and lies in the Coahuixtla ejido. This is cane, sorghum, maize and vegetable country, like the rest of Amacuzac.

The climate is warm with summer rain: about 24.4 °C on average, April the warmest month at 27.6 °C, and some 1,166 mm of rain a year, September being the wettest. Expect heavy heat in May; the record high is 41.9 °C, set in May 2024.

It is not a set-piece destination: the village has no registered hotels, and the restaurants in the area are mostly in Amacuzac, about 3.5 km away, serving carnitas, pozole and tacos. Casahuatlán is a look at how a southern Morelos village lives, and it pairs easily with Coahuixtla, less than 2 km away.
