About Jardines de México

Jardines de México covers 51 hectares at kilometer 129 of the Mexico-Acapulco highway, in the Tehuixtla and Tequesquitengo area. According to El Universal, 37 of those hectares are split among seven themed gardens, and the park opened in early 2014. It bills itself as one of the largest flower gardens in the world; guides disagree on the acreage (Time Out says 37 hectares), so treat the figure as an order of magnitude.

The visit moves from one garden to the next along wide, sunny paths. The Italian garden copies Renaissance style, with fountains and marble sculpture, including a figure of Neptune. The Japanese garden has bamboo, a pagoda, a red bridge and a tea house over the water. The tropical garden gathers orchids, anthuriums and waterfalls, and the cactus garden holds about 200 species from Mexico's dry regions. Cuatro Primaveras is the central space, with a fountain and seasonal flower beds, and the Laberinto de los Sentidos hides contemporary art among walls of greenery.

There is also Consentidos, a children's area with a butterfly house and workshops, and the Dalia restaurant overlooking the pond. Some areas have been closed for renovation at different times, so ask before you go. During event seasons (concerts, a Day of the Dead festival) prices and hours change.

Allow half a day for a full visit: the park is big, it is hot, and the internal shuttle costs extra.

How to get to Jardines de México

Drive from Cuernavaca: 40 min, 46 km

By car: take the Mexico-Acapulco highway (95D) and look for kilometer 129, level with Tequesquitengo and Tehuixtla; the park entrance is right on the highway. From Mexico City guides give about two to two and a half hours depending on traffic. From Cuernavaca it is about 40 minutes south on the same highway.

By bus: from the Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) there are departures to Jojutla (Pullman de Morelos runs Taxqueña-Cuernavaca-Jojutla) and to Cuernavaca; Chilango and Time Out suggest asking the driver whether the bus passes Jardines de México, or getting off at Tequesquitengo and taking a taxi. From Cuernavaca, Pullman de Morelos leaves for Jojutla about every 20 minutes (Wikivoyage). Central Jojutla is about 12 km from the park and Tlaltizapán about 18 km as the crow flies; take a taxi for the last stretch from either.
