    About Cuauchichinola

    Cuauchichinola comes from Nahuatl and means 'place where burnt trees abound' (cuahuitl, tree; chichinolli, burnt; tlan, place of abundance), according to Spanish Wikipedia. It is a locality in the municipality of Mazatepec, in hot country at about 920 m, with an annual mean temperature of 24.5 °C. INEGI counted 2,150 people in 2005, 2,383 in 2010 and 2,422 in 2020. A Nahuatl dictionary lists it as a Nahua community in the Cuernavaca area around 1540.

    What sets it apart is the Ojos de Agua. Diario de Morelos describes springs fed by seepage tied to the Chalma and Tembembe rivers, which in the twentieth century became the cold-water resort Paraíso Escondido, Ojos de Agua and irrigated more than 350 hectares of sugar cane. The earthquake of 19 September 2017 dried them out over about three months, and the resort closed in April 2018. In December 2025 water returned, around 10 litres a minute at the main spring, and the civil association that runs it planned to reopen in January 2026. At the same time Mazatepec's authorities asked families not to visit some of the springs because of risk, so check before you go.

    The main feria is on 25 April for San Marcos, patron of a church in one of the neighbourhoods; there is another on 20 November with a parade and bullfights. About 1.7 km north of the centre stands a yellow-and-red chapel to the Virgen de la Candelaria, listed as a monument.

    How to get to Cuauchichinola

    Drive from Cuernavaca: 45 min, 50 km

    Cuauchichinola is in southern Morelos, about 7 km south of the municipal seat, Mazatepec (roughly 15 minutes by road). From Cuernavaca, the nearest city (about 32 km as the crow flies, roughly 50 to 60 minutes by road), head south on the highway toward Alpuyeca and then take the Alpuyeca-Grutas de Cacahuamilpa road (federal 166), which passes Santa Cruz on the way to Mazatepec; Diario de Morelos also mentions the federal México-Acapulco road as access, so check the route on a map. Xochitepec, the nearest pueblo on our list, is about 16 km away. By public transport, Pullman de Morelos has a station in Mazatepec with departures to Cuernavaca (Cuernavaca Centro); from Mazatepec you need a local taxi or colectivo to reach Cuauchichinola, and We found no published timetable.
