About Apancingo

The 2020 census counted 546 people in Apancingo (288 women and 258 men) living in 154 homes, at 1,133 m above sea level. The village has grown from 428 residents in 2005 and 504 in 2010. Nearly every house has electricity and piped water, about one in three has internet, and nobody was recorded as speaking an indigenous language. It is one of the southern villages of the municipality of Coatlán del Río, roughly 8 km in a straight line from the town hall.

The land is low scrub and dry hills of western Morelos. For the municipality as a whole the climate is warm steppe, with an average of 23.5 °C a year and about 717 mm of rain a year, concentrated in the rainy season, so the landscape changes a lot between summer and the dry months.

There is no monument to look for. What you find is a village of wide streets and pink garden walls, with a health centre of the Morelos health services. The nearest neighbours are Benito Juárez, about 2 km to the southeast, and the federal women's prison (CEFERESO No. 16), 2.3 km to the south; Contlalco is about 3 km away. The village has no hotel or restaurant, so it suits a stop on a drive through western Morelos rather than a destination of its own.

From Cuernavaca it is about 36 km in a straight line and roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car (approx.). The usual route is the 95D toll road toward Acapulco to Alpuyeca, then federal highway 166 through Miacatlán, Mazatepec and Tetecala to Coatlán del Río, about 47 km from Cuernavaca according to Rome2rio. From the town hall to Apancingo it is about 8 km as the crow flies, a bit more by road: ask in Coatlán for the road south. Another landmark is the CEFERESO No. 16 women's federal prison, on the Amacuzac–Grutas de Cacahuamilpa road (km 6, per the SSPC directory), about 2 km from the village.

By bus, Pullman de Morelos runs from central Cuernavaca to Coatlán del Río about every four hours, around 75 minutes (Rome2rio; check times). From Mexico City you reach Cuernavaca from the Terminal Sur at Taxqueña. We found no published service from Coatlán to Apancingo, so a taxi or a local colectivo is the safest bet. Taxco is about 20 km in a straight line, roughly 25 minutes.
