About Tilancingo

Between 2010 and 2020 Tilancingo grew from 733 to 898 people, which makes it the fifth largest locality in its municipality, Coatlán del Río, after the seat, Cocoyotla, Michapa and Chavarría. It stands at 1,042 m. The 2020 census counted 256 occupied homes (274 in 2010), nearly all with electricity and piped water; four households in five have a mobile phone and 28% own a car.

The photograph for this village was taken at the Tilancingo junction on the highway, marked km 35: an open curve with a double yellow line, trees on one side and hills behind. The village lives right by the road: 1.3 km to the northwest is a locality called El Axixintle, also known as El 35, with 253 people, a nickname that seems to come from the same kilometre.

Around it is a tight ring of neighbours. Coatlán del Río, the seat, is about 2 km away; Chavarría, 1.9 km to the northeast; Cocoyotla, 2 km west; and San Antonio, 1.7 km south. With so many villages so close, Tilancingo suits a short walk between fields and orchards more than a trip to see any one thing. There are no hotels; the nearest are in Tetecala and Coatlán.
