About Coatlán del Río

Coatlán del Río is the seat of a small municipality in western Morelos, tucked against the State of Mexico and Guerrero: it borders Malinalco and Miacatlán to the north and Tetecala and Amacuzac to the south. In 2020 it had 1,907 residents, at about 1,010 to 1,020 m depending on the source, on the Chalma River, which comes down from Chalma in the State of Mexico. The name is Nahuatl and means place where snakes abound.

Local tradition says the Toltecs founded the town in 1509 on a pilgrimage from Malinalco. The first settlement, Coatlán Viejo, stood 5 km to the south on Las Paredes hill, and the people later moved to Axoyochi hill, 3 km to the east. Under Spanish rule it was an encomienda of Juan Zermeño, the present church was founded in 1808 with bells added in 1809, and the municipality was created on 22 May 1862. In the plaza stands a rock carved with hieroglyphic and pictographic figures, the Piedra Coatlán.

People live from farming, cattle, dairy and fruit and flower growing; the Feria del Mango is held on 25 April. The liveliest dates are 1 to 6 January, with rodeos, fireworks and a brass band, and the year's end: on 31 December people dressed as death and devils parade through town, and on 1 January a pushcart carries a person dressed as a baby for the new year. In Holy Week the parish atrium is decked with huertos made of wooden posts, coconut fronds and banana leaves.
