About Michapa

Michapa sits at about 1,189 m above sea level in the southwest of Morelos and belongs to the municipality of Coatlán del Río. It is a small place: 1,127 people lived here in 2020, against just 30 counted in 1900. The name is Nahuatl, from michin, fish, and apan, river, and means river of fish.

What defines the village most is where it stands. Federal Highway 166 runs through Michapa on its way from Alpuyeca toward Coatlán del Río and the Cacahuamilpa caves, and Federal Highway 103 starts here too: a road of about 16 km that drops south to Amacuzac and joins Highway 95. That is why many people know Michapa as a junction, and why its best-known photograph is of the crossroads itself, with its trucks and road signs.

On the outskirts there is a lagoon, the Laguna de Michapa, which Wikimedia Commons photos show as a shallow sheet of water ringed by dry scrub, where cattle come to drink. We found no published hours, fees or visitor facilities for it, so treat it as open countryside and ask in the village how to reach the shore. Michapa is above all a useful stop for anyone heading to the caves, to Coatlán del Río or toward Amacuzac.

How to get to Michapa

Drive from Taxco: 40 min, 35 km

By car: Michapa is on Federal Highway 166, which leaves Highway 95 at Alpuyeca (south of Cuernavaca) and runs through Miacatlán, Tetecala and Coatlán del Río toward the Cacahuamilpa caves. From Mexico City take the 95D toll road to Cuernavaca, keep going toward Acapulco as far as Alpuyeca, then turn west onto the 166. From Cuernavaca it is about 36 km in a straight line, somewhat more by road (about 45 minutes to an hour). Wikipedia puts the municipal seat, Coatlán del Río, about 65 km from Cuernavaca. To the south, Federal Highway 103 starts at Michapa and runs about 16 km down to Amacuzac, where it joins Highway 95 toward Puente de Ixtla and Iguala.

By public transport: take a bus from Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) to Cuernavaca, then onward transport toward Coatlán del Río or the caves along the 166, which passes through Michapa; check at the Cuernavaca terminal which line runs, as we found no published timetable. Xochitepec, the nearest pueblo, is about 21 km in a straight line (about 25 minutes by car).
