El Florido

Roughly 340 more people live in the colony of El Florido than in 2005: INEGI counted 849 residents in 2005, 1,008 in 2010 and 1,191 in 2020, making it the third most populous locality in the municipality of Mazatepec, after the seat itself (4,178) and Cuauchichinola (2,422). In 2020 it had 342 occupied homes, and the average schooling was close to 10 years, well above what other localities of the area show.

It stands at about 990 m, less than 1.5 km northwest of the centre of Mazatepec, and runs along the road from Alpuyeca to Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, where the municipality has recently carried out drainage and paving works. The climate is hot and semi-arid, with an annual mean of about 24 °C, afternoon highs above 33 °C in April and May, and rain concentrated between June and September.

Small settlements surround it: Colonia Valle Verde half a kilometre to the west, Las Huertas under 1 km to the east and Álvaro Obregón 1.5 km to the southwest. In Mazatepec, a little further, stands the Señor del Calvario shrine, a church worth a look, and the hills around, such as El Ayochi (1,245 m), lie about 3 km to the northwest.

There is no tourist trade in the colony itself; restaurants and food stands cluster in the municipal seat.
