    About Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas

    Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas stands in the village of San Gabriel las Palmas, in the municipality of Amacuzac, at about 909 metres above sea level. The village had 2,955 inhabitants in the 2020 census and takes its name from its patron saint, the archangel Gabriel.

    Press and tourism sources agree that the main house was founded in 1529 on the orders of Hernán Cortés and began as a Franciscan house and monastery. By those accounts the order left in 1558 and the place became a sugar hacienda, eventually one of the biggest mills in New Spain. The same pieces say it saw episodes of the Independence wars and served as Emiliano Zapata's headquarters during the Revolution. These claims are repeated without documents in view, so read them as the story the property itself tells.

    Today it is a luxury boutique hotel. It has 20 rooms in five categories, about 25 hectares of gardens with a lake and artificial waterfalls, tennis and padel courts, pools, the Amate spa and the La Troje restaurant. It is also a wedding venue: it adjoins the 16th-century church of San Gabriel Arcángel and has three banquet halls. National media made it widely known when singers Ángela Aguilar and Christian Nodal married there. It is not a ruin you can wander freely: you visit as a guest or at an event.

    How to get to Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas

    Drive from Cuernavaca: 35 min, 41 km

    The hacienda is in San Gabriel las Palmas, in the municipality of Amacuzac, between the town of Amacuzac and Puente de Ixtla. From Mexico City it is about 2 hours by car and from Cuernavaca about 37 minutes, according to El Universal; the route follows the corridor into southern Morelos toward Jojutla and Puente de Ixtla. Check the hotel's map for the last turn.

    By bus: from the Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) in Mexico City, Pullman de Morelos runs to Cuernavaca and to Jojutla. We found no published direct service to San Gabriel las Palmas, so from Jojutla or Puente de Ixtla you would normally take a taxi (about 20 to 30 minutes, an estimate).

    Straight-line distances: about 21 km to Xochitepec and 36 km to Cuernavaca; by road it is more.
