About Contlalco

Contlalco is a hamlet of 299 people (169 men and 130 women, 2020 census) in 94 homes, at 1,101 m. OpenStreetMap lists 316, so the figure depends on the source. Oddly, it belongs to the municipality of Tetecala although it lies about 9 km in a straight line southwest of the seat, right beside localities of Coatlán del Río: Benito Juárez is only 1 km to the northwest and Apancingo 3 km.

More than the hamlet itself, it is known for its junction. A photograph taken where the roads cross shows a wide highway with a double yellow line and a green sign with arrows to Contlalco and to Grutas; this is where traffic headed for the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa splits from those turning into the hamlet. Low hills of western Morelos fill the horizon behind it.

In the hamlet every home has electricity and nearly all have piped water; three households in four have a mobile phone. 2.4 km to the west is CEFERESO No. 16, the federal women's prison, and 3 km to the northeast is San José el Potrero (847 people), the larger neighbour. There are no tourist services: this is a place to pass through calmly, not to stay.

How to get to Contlalco

Drive from Taxco: 50 min, 42 km

Contlalco is about 9 km in a straight line southwest of Tetecala and about 36 km from Cuernavaca (approx. 50 to 60 minutes by car). From Cuernavaca, take the 95D toll road toward Acapulco to Alpuyeca and continue on federal highway 166 (Miacatlán, Mazatepec, Tetecala); near Coatlán del Río look for the signs to Contlalco and the Grutas: the Contlalco junction is the one marked in the photo on this page. CEFERESO No. 16 women's prison, 2.4 km away, is on the Amacuzac–Grutas de Cacahuamilpa road (km 6, per the SSPC directory) and works as a landmark.

By bus, Pullman de Morelos runs from central Cuernavaca to Tetecala about every four hours, around an hour (Rome2rio; check times). From Mexico City take a bus to Cuernavaca at the Terminal Sur in Taxqueña. From Tetecala or Coatlán del Río ask for a taxi or local colectivo: we found no published service to the hamlet. Taxco is about 20 km in a straight line, roughly 25 minutes.
