About Xametla

Xametla is a stretch of beach on the southern shore of Chamela Bay, in La Huerta municipality, Jalisco. It lies roughly 1.4 km northwest of Chamela village and a kilometre north of the El Negrito cove; between the two, the Chamela creek meets the sea and the beach named after the village runs along the shore.

About 600 metres out lies San Agustín island, with San Pedro, the Mosca islet and, further north, Colorada island beside it, making this one of the spots on the coast with the most islands in view. The bay's nine islands have been a nature sanctuary since 9 April 2001 and are breeding grounds for sea turtles and species found in very few places; anyone reaching them by kayak or boat must carry out all their rubbish. To actually set foot on an island, the practical option is Punta Pérula at the other end of the bay, where boats leave for Isla Cocinas.

The water is clear, turquoise on sunny days, and the beach rarely gets busy. There are no large hotels; some of the land beside the beach is private and closed to cars, so vehicles stay in the parking area by the entrance and you walk the last stretch. Visitors who stay over tend to camp or sleep in Chamela village, which also has the nearest places to eat.

How to get to Xametla

Xametla is on the sea side of federal Highway 200 (Manzanillo-Puerto Vallarta), level with Chamela village; short roads run down from the highway and you walk the last stretch from the parking area. From Manzanillo, drive north on 200 through Barra de Navidad, Cihuatlán and Careyes: 1 h 40 min from Manzanillo, 132 km by road. The nearest Pueblo Mágico is Talpa de Allende, 3 h 35 min and 180 km by road. By public transport, buses go from Guadalajara to La Huerta (about 4 h 30 min), then a taxi or colectivo to the bay.
