About Huitzilan
Huitzilan is the seat of the municipality of Huitzilan de Serdán in Puebla's Sierra Norte. The Nahuatl name combines huitzilin, hummingbird, and tlan, place of plenty: "place where hummingbirds abound"; a tourism guide also calls it "the ruby of the Sierra Norte". Some 4,693 people lived here in 2020, at around 920 m. The municipality was founded in 1895.
Huitzilan has a strong coffee tradition. Every year it holds a Coffee Expo and a quintal race, in which runners carry the traditional coffee sacks of up to 57 kilos that were once the unit coffee was sold in.
The main festival honours the Virgin of the Assumption, the town's patron, held in 2024 from 10 to 15 August with a procession, offerings of decorated candles and arts events. The programme includes a huapango festival and a poetry contest in Spanish and Nahuatl, the region's original language, honouring its people's roots. The Pueblo Mágico of Cuetzalan is some 19 km away in a straight line.
