About Nanacatlán

Nanacatlán is a village in the municipality of Zapotitlán de Méndez in Puebla's Sierra Norte. The place name is Nahuatl, from nanacatl, mushroom, and tlan, place of plenty: "place where nanacates abound". It lies at roughly 930 m above sea level and counted 1,222 inhabitants in 2020. The village celebrates Pascua, Holy Week, with processions and festivities.

The municipality of Zapotitlán de Méndez, "place where zapotes abound", was founded in 1895, and its surname honours Juan Nepomuceno Méndez, former governor of Puebla and president of Mexico from December 1876 to February 1877. It is small, about 20 km² at an average of 640 m, between 600 and 1,500 m, with a semi-warm humid climate. It lies in the Tecuantepec River sub-basin of the Tecolutla basin, draining to the Gulf.

It borders Hueytlalpan and Ixtepec to the north, Atlequizayan to the east, Xochitlán de Vicente Suárez, Huitzilan de Serdán and Zongozotla to the south, and Tepango de Rodríguez and Camocuautla to the west, deep in the Totonac and Nahua sierra. The Pueblo Mágico of Cuetzalan is roughly 16 km off as the crow flies.
