About Nauzontla

Nauzontla is the seat of the municipality of the same name in Puebla's north-eastern sierra. The name comes from the Nahuatl nahui, four, tzontli, head or summit, and tlan, beside: "near four peaks" or four hills. The village stands at about 1,420 m and had 1,122 people in 2020. The municipality, about 42 km², is among the smallest in the state and borders Zoquiapan, Cuetzalan del Progreso, Zacapoxtla, Xochiapulco and Xochitlán de Vicente Suárez.

Its main building is the 16th-century parish church of Santa María de la Natividad. The patron-saint feast is on 8 September, celebrated with stewardships, processions, flower-decked candles and masses, and dances such as the voladores, matlachines, toreadores, negritos and quetzales, plus fireworks, bands, bull-riding and dances.

Local cooking includes black mole and red chilatole, caldo aguado or chilpozonte with chicken or beef, tamales, enfrijoladas, pressed pork crackling and tlacoyos of field peas; for something sweet there is dried fruit and pan dulce, and to drink, coffee, atole, aguardiente and yolixpa, the herbal liqueur of the sierra. Farmers grow maize, beans and potatoes, and the village has bakeries, carpenters and tailors. The Pueblo Mágico of Cuetzalan is about 11 km away in a straight line.
