About Zaragoza

Zaragoza is the seat of the municipality of the same name in north-eastern Puebla, in the Sierra Norte, at about 2,300 m. The town had 11,487 people in 2020, and the municipality, barely 31 km², had 16,752 in 2020. It is named after the Spanish city: some of the first families who settled here came from Zaragoza, which is why the town honours the Virgin of the Pillar, patron of the Hispanic world.

The town grew around the railway. In 1898 work began on Zaragoza station on land of the Zaragoza hacienda, some 5,000 hectares of the old Tlatlauquitepec district owned by the Spaniard Juan R. Lavín. In exchange for the right of way, the Mexican Eastern Railway gave him a free annual pass and water for the locomotives, and let him build a warehouse opposite the station for his lime, which he shipped from Acuaco, where some kilns remain. On 5 May 1905 Porfirio Díaz flagged off the Puebla–Zaragoza–Teziutlán branch line. Today there is a park beside the old station.

The climate is mild and sub-humid with summer rain, colder in the mountainous south-east. The big festival is for the Virgin of the Pillar on 12 October; the fair is opened every 6 October by an elected queen. The Rueda and Mondragón families, among the first in town, brought the images of the Virgin of the Pillar and of Carmen from Spain.
