About Ahuehuetes

Yaonáhuac tradition holds that Hernán Cortés planted an ahuehuete tree in one of the town's neighbourhoods, and that the neighbourhood came to be called Ahuehuetes; the tree became a symbol of the place and of the municipality. Today Ahuehuetes is a locality with 1,168 people in 2020, registered as such in 2014, at about 1,790 m and just 4 km from Tlatlauquitepec.

Yaonáhuac has two readings in Nahuatl: "beside the great waterway" or "they go together", after two small rivers, the Ilita and the Xochihuatzaloyan, which run apart and then join to form the Ohcal or Puxtla. The Nahuas called it Hueyiyaonáhuac; it was subject to the Aztec Triple Alliance, Cortés conquered it in 1519, it was made a town on 17 February 1560 and it has been a free municipality since 1895.

It is very rainy country, 1,400 to 3,600 mm a year, semi-warm or temperate and humid all year round, and almost two thirds of the municipality is still forest. Its year-round rivers, the Xucayucan, Santiago, Xochihuatzaloyan and Apulco, flow to the Tecolutla. People here carve wood and weave and embroider shawls, waistcoats and skirts; they eat mole de Yaonáhuac, mole de oro and smoked chicken, with chilacayote squash sweets, and drink coffee, chocolate and fruit wines of yolixpa, huiquiño and catorti. Festivals are played on traditional string instruments. The church of Santiago Apóstol in the seat dates from the 16th century.
