About Sosa

With 4,244 people in 2020, Sosa is one of the largest places in Chignautla, the municipality that forms a single metropolitan area with Teziutlán in north-eastern Puebla. It lies at about 2,190 m in the small valley where most of the municipality's people live, west of the Tezompa and Chignautla hills.

Chignautla comes from chicnahui, nine, atl, water, and tlan, place: "place of nine rivers". The municipality, about 105 km², occupies one of the highest parts of the sierra. On Cerro de Chignautla, around 2,560 m, which separates it from Atempan, stands a huge Cristo Rey statue with views over much of the region. To the south, the 3,100 m Cerro Hilillo and Cerro Arenas are part of the Los Humeros caldera, a volcano 15 to 21 km across with fumaroles and sulphur, where the federal power company runs a geothermal plant. From there the land drops toward the Llanos de San Juan.

Water runs two ways: to the north, the Caja de Agua and Ateta flow to the Joloapan and the Viga Ancha to the Apulco, bound for the Gulf; to the south, streams vanish into the closed Totolcingo basin. People here carve wood, eat smoked chicken, pipián and tamales, drink coffee, chocolate and fruit wines, and play brass-band music. The parish church of San Mateo in the seat dates from the 16th century.
