About San Miguel Tenextatiloyan

On federal highway 129 between Cuyoaco and Zaragoza lies a village whose life turns on red clay: San Miguel Tenextatiloyan, a junta auxiliar of Zautla municipality at about 2,430 m where the Sierra Norte begins, widely known as San Miguel de las Ollas.

Its Nahuatl name means roughly "where lime is burned", and San Miguel is its patron, the archangel. The municipal history notes that clay pots have been made here since before the Conquest, and the craft is still passed down within families. Clay is dug from the nearby hills, dried, ground and moistened, then pressed into moulds. The pieces are fired in stone kilns, painted, dipped in glaze and fired again to set it. Potters fuel the kilns with ocote pine and with offcuts sold to them by local sawmills. Some families, such as the Toribios, have won Fonart and national ceramics prizes.

The village has grown steadily, from 1,836 people in 1900 to 4,597 at the 2020 census, making it one of the largest communities in Zautla even though it is not the seat, which lies about 12 km away by paved road. Besides pottery, people make their living from farming.

On Saturdays a market is held where the potters themselves sell lead-free cookware and decorative pieces. You will find everything from small cazuelas to big pots for beans or café de olla, plus jugs, plates and braziers. Bring cash, since many workshops take neither cards nor transfers.
