Nature reserve 5 km southwest of Teziutlán
Nine Springs park: cold, crystal-clear spring pools below the Cerro de Chignautla, with rowboats and antojito stands.
Chignautla, Teziutlán's neighbor a few kilometers to the southwest, takes its name from the Nahuatl for "nine waters", and the springs that gave it that name are its main draw. They are now a public park, the Parque Recreativo Nueve Manantiales, where water filtering down from the Cerro de Chignautla rises into clear pools of different depths.
The water is clean, transparent and very cold, the kind of swim that wakes you up. Around the pools are lawns, palapas and play areas, small boats for rent, and stands selling sierra antojitos such as tlayoyos, chalupas and gorditas, along with xole and other drinks. Entry has been very cheap, and pets are not allowed, to keep the water clean.
Above the town rises the Cerro de Chignautla, about 2,560 meters high, with a giant statue of Christ on its summit. On clear days the view takes in the Llanos de San Juan, the Cofre de Perote and much of the northeastern sierra.

Getting there
The springs are about 15 minutes from central Teziutlán by car or taxi, in the town of Chignautla, and local buses connect the two towns. The park is usually open from early morning until about 6 p.m.; arrive early on hot weekends, when it gets busy.
