About Tuzamapan de Galeana

Tuzamapan de Galeana is the seat of the municipality of the same name in Puebla's Sierra Norte, in Totonac country. The name comes from the Nahuatl tuzan, gopher, and pan, river: "river of the gophers". The village stands at about 530 m, in the low, warm part of the sierra, and had 1,551 people in 2020; the municipality had 5,924 in 2020, about the same as in 2010.

It became a municipality in 1895. It is small, about 42 km² at an average of 540 m, and borders the state of Veracruz to the north, Huehuetla and Caxhuacan to the west, Jonotla to the south and Cuetzalan del Progreso to the east. Like its neighbours it belongs to the Totonac sierra, where pre-Conquest beliefs blended with Catholic evangelisation from the 16th century.

The village's main building is the church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, with its thick stone buttresses. For travellers, Tuzamapan is very close to two Pueblos Mágicos: Cuetzalan, its neighbour to the east, and Zozocolco in Veracruz, about 8 km away in a straight line.
