About Olintla

Olintla comes from the Nahuatl Ollintlan or Ullintlan, so it reads two ways: "place of earthquakes", from ollin, movement, or "place where there is rubber", from ulli. The village is the seat of a Totonac municipality in the Sierra Norte, part of the Totonacapan, with 2,102 people in 2020; it lies at only about 710 m, in the low, warm part of the sierra near the Veracruz line.

The municipality, about 66 km², borders Veracruz, Jopala, Ixtepec, Hermenegildo Galeana, Huehuetla, Caxhuacan, Hueytlalpan, Camocuautla and Coatepec. It rains a great deal, 2,400 to 3,600 mm a year, with a semi-warm, humid climate all year and averages of 18 to 24 °C. Almost all of it drains to the Laxaxalpan River and on to the Tecolutla; the Ajajalpan, Tapayula and San Pedro run all year. Forest covers almost half the land. In the 2010s the Ajajalpan basin saw strong opposition from Totonac communities to hydroelectric projects, which reached the national press in 2013.

The parish church of San José, the patron, dates from the 16th century. More than 9,000 people in the municipality speak an indigenous language, mostly Totonac. People carve wood, make cedar furniture, embroidery, pottery and woollens; they eat chicken tixmole, tamales, barbacoa and mole de siembra, and the music is huapango.
