About Tepango de Rodríguez

Tepango de Rodríguez crowns a hill in the Totonac sierra of northern Puebla and heads a very small municipality. The name Tepango comes from the Nahuatl tépetl, hill, and aco, high up: "place high on the hill". It lies at roughly 1,520 m above sea level and counted 3,298 inhabitants in 2020.

The region was first settled by Totonac groups, who were later conquered by the Aztecs. In 1895 it became a free municipality under the name San Antonio Tepango, and in 1935 it was renamed Tepango de Rodríguez in honour of former president Abelardo L. Rodríguez.

It is a small, mountainous municipality: about 29 km², ranging from 700 to 2,000 m. Most of it, 77%, drains through the Laxaxalpan River sub-basin and the rest through the Tecuantepec. It borders Ahuacatlán, Amixtlán, Camocuautla, Zapotitlán de Méndez and Zongozotla, all villages of the Totonac and Nahua sierra. The Pueblo Mágico of Zacatlán is roughly 19 km off as the crow flies.
