Vinata Los Osuna

La Vinata Los Osuna is an agave distillery in the rural part of the municipality of Mazatlán, about 3 km south of the old village of La Noria and roughly 35 km from the port. In Sinaloa a vinata is the traditional name for a ranch where agave spirits are made, and Los Osuna, which appears on maps simply as "La Vinata", sits among the low hills at the foot of the Sierra Madre Occidental, surrounded by the fields of agave it uses. It is one of the standard stops on day trips from Mazatlán into the countryside, together with La Noria's leather workshops and Sunday market.

Agave spirits have been distilled in this part of Sinaloa since the 1800s, and Los Osuna has been working for more than a century, which makes it one of the few vinatas around Mazatlán that still produces. Its agave spirit is well regarded and has won awards in Mexico. The range covers the classic blanco, reposado and añejo, plus lighter, lower-proof liqueurs made for cocktails, flavored with vanilla, coconut, lemon or cinnamon. The plants take seven to eight years to grow before the jima, the harvest in which the leaves are cut away and the heart, the piña, is carried to the distillery.

The visit is a guided walk through the site, following the spirit from the field through its five stages: preparing the agave, extracting the sugars from the piñas, fermentation, distillation and aging. A 2025 report put the price of the tour, tasting included, at 100 pesos. The tour ends with a tasting of the different products. Many visitors come on organized excursions from Mazatlán that combine the vinata with La Noria, ATV rides or a zipline course nearby; if you drive yourself, it pairs naturally with lunch and a walk around La Noria.
