About Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción de Chilpancingo

The cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción is Chilpancingo's main church and the building where, on 13 September 1813, José María Morelos opened the First Congress of Anáhuac, the insurgent assembly that laid the groundwork for Mexico's first constitution. There Morelos styled himself Servant of the Nation and presented his Sentimientos de la Nación. The church therefore belongs to the Plaza Cívica Primer Congreso de Anáhuac complex around the city's main square, and INAH lists it as a historic monument.

Most of it went up between the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Neoclassical style, on a Latin-cross plan with a central dome and two bell towers holding five bells. The façade has two storeys and a crest: below, the entrance arch set in rusticated stone with no columns; above, the choir window between two square Tuscan columns, flanked by large medallions and topped by a triangular pediment carrying the eagle from Iturbide's imperial coat of arms. The interior is plain, with Neoclassical side altarpieces; one nave, dedicated to the Virgin, doubles as a burial place for priests and bishops, and the sagrario chapel serves as the sacristy.

It is the seat of the Diocese of Chilpancingo-Chilapa, which used to be based in Chilapa. The earthquake on the night of 10 December 2011 damaged its towers, and the church was shut while the authorities decided between full and partial demolition; in the end it was rebuilt in 2012 and returned to worship. In 2025 the diocese named it one of its Jubilee churches for the Holy Year.

Every 13 September the Sentimientos de la Nación medal is presented here, and since 2022 the town council has handed out its Hermanos Bravo award here around 20–22 April, marking the anniversary of Nicolás Bravo's death.
