About La Avispa Museo Interactivo

La Avispa (The Wasp) is Chilpancingo's science museum for children, also known as the Museo del Niño. It stands on the southern edge of the city, on the federal Mexico–Acapulco highway at kilometre 270, in the Villa Moderna district next to the Instituto Tecnológico de Chilpancingo. Its motto promises a place where learning is easy and fun.

It was set up by a decree from governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero, published in the state's official gazette on 10 April 1998, which made it a public social-welfare body with its own assets; the doors opened three days later, on 13 April. The decree tasks it with showing science, technology and Guerrero itself to children and teenagers through up-to-date exhibits, and with trying to pay its own way from ticket and service income on top of public and private support.

The grounds cover almost 13,000 m², of which about 4,350 are built up. Inside are five permanent halls and three for temporary shows, covering physics and technology, care for the environment and healthy eating, all through exhibits children can touch and set in motion. Beyond the galleries there are workshops for children and teenagers, a play area for toddlers, a 4D cinema for family films, an observatory, a botanical garden, an organic vegetable plot and a butterfly house. A multipurpose hall and an auditorium can be hired for events.

The state government still runs it: its 2025 work plan set out to maintain the exhibits and refurbish galleries, bring in more school groups and highlight the role of women in science. It makes a good stop for families driving between Acapulco and the state capital or spending a day in Chilpancingo.

How to get to La Avispa Museo Interactivo

The museum is at km 270 of federal highway 95, the Mexico–Acapulco road, in Villa Moderna next to the Tecnológico de Chilpancingo, 4 km and about 5 minutes by car from the city centre. Coming up from Acapulco on the Autopista del Sol (95D) or the free highway 95, you reach it at the southern entrance to Chilpancingo, before the centre; the drive takes about 1 h 40 min. From Mexico City, Estrella de Oro leaves the Terminal del Sur (Taxqueña) every hour and takes about three and a half hours; Futura and ETN also run the route. From Acapulco, Estrella de Oro buses leave often from its Costera terminal. All arrive at the Central de Autobuses at Avenida Benito Juárez 16, on the north side of town; from there or from the main square, a taxi to the museum is the simplest option. The US government tells its citizens not to travel to Guerrero; if you go, travel in daylight and check local conditions first.
