About Parque Hidalgo

The park stands on the old orchards and cemetery of the San Francisco convent. After the Reform Laws the friars left the building in 1861, and on 4 October 1862 the town council's syndic signed a contract to build a promenade there in the style of Mexico City's Alameda Central. The job dragged on: it was inaugurated in 1882 as Parque Porfirio Díaz and took its present name on 14 June 1911. It is among the oldest parks in Pachuca.

Pieces were added over time. A bandstand went in during 1904 and was replaced in 1920 by a square one donated by the American community. A bronze of the goddess Hera, a gift from Spain for the Independence Centennial, arrived in 1910. In the 1930s a small lake here carried rowing boats; when it dried up it left more green space. Today there are basketball, football and volleyball courts, bleachers, a children's play area and a central fountain.

The busts and monuments are what stand out: Miguel Hidalgo, Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Francisco Noble, Vicente Segura, the governors Vicente Aguirre del Castillo and Carlos Ramírez Guerrero, and a peace dove made from firearms donated by the 18th Military Zone. The Floral Clock, restored in 2019, plays El Hidalguense at 12:00, El son de la negra at 15:00, the national anthem at 18:00 and Cielito Lindo at 21:00. A local legend, the Boy of the Tree, has its own corner. In early October the park hosts the traditional San Francisco Fair.
