About Plaza Juárez
Plaza Juárez stands on the land where Gabriel Mancera built, from 1881, the terminal of the Hidalgo y del Nordeste railway. Until about 1953 it sent off "El rápido de las Siete", which made Pachuca to Mexico City in a little over an hour. The station and the stables of the Real del Monte y Pachuca company were pulled down in 1956 and 1957, and on 21 March 1957 Governor Quintín Rueda Villagrán opened the square with two works: the monument to Benito Juárez and the Teatro Hidalgo Bartolomé de Medina.
The monument, by Carlos Obregón Santacilia with a sculpture by Juan Leonardo Cordero, has a pedestal carved with an open book marked 1857-1957 and the line "El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz". The theatre is neoclassical, with round arches on its quarry-stone front and room for about 450 people. Around them stand the Government Palace, four storeys with marble walls and granite floors (opened on 15 September 1970), the Guillermo Romo de Vivar theatre with its Leo Acosta gallery, and the small Jardín de los Hombres Ilustres.
The square is where the governor gives the Grito de Independencia and where the city's Christmas tree goes up. In 2017 a 790 m² Day of the Dead altar was built here, and the 2019 one, at 1,044.3 m², again won a Guinness record. A remodel between June and September 2024 renewed the esplanade with about 8,000 m² of stamped concrete, irrigation and ramps, and it reopened on 15 September that year.
