Hot springs 12 km north of Mineral del Chico
A hot-springs park past Atotonilco el Grande with thermal pools, slides, cabins and a hotel; a Comarca Minera geosite.
Balneario Amajac is a hot-springs resort in the ejido of Santa María Amajac, in the municipality of Atotonilco el Grande, set in a valley where the pine forests of the mining country give way to drier hills. It is one of the best-known thermal water parks in Hidalgo and a weekend favorite for families from Pachuca and Mexico City.
The water comes from deep underground. Rain seeps through the rock to great depths, is heated by contact with hot volcanic rock and rises again through faults and fractures, coming out at temperatures close to 46 °C. The springs are one of the geosites of the Comarca Minera UNESCO Global Geopark, which covers the volcanic and mining landscapes around Pachuca.
The resort has warm pools, wading areas for children, water slides and green areas, plus a spa, restaurants, camping, cabins and hotel rooms. It is known for staying open around the clock, so a night swim in the hot water under the stars is part of the appeal; confirm current hours before you go.
What to see and do
Soak in the thermal pools, which come from springs of up to about 46 °C.
Try the water slides and let children play in the wading pools.
Take a night swim if the park is open late when you visit.
Stay over in a cabin, hotel room or at the camping area.
