About Museo El Rehilete

The Museo Interactivo para la Niñez y Juventud Hidalguense, known simply as El Rehilete ("the pinwheel"), stands at kilometre 84.5 of Boulevard Felipe Ángeles, on the southern approach into Pachuca and technically inside the municipality of Mineral de la Reforma. The name nods to the state capital's nickname, "la Bella Airosa" (the breezy beauty): the strong winds that sweep the city are exactly what spins a pinwheel, a traditional toy that also stands in for how energy is generated. The Hidalgo state government built it and opened it on 28 February 1997, although the planetarium had been running since 1993. An observatory followed in January 1999, an archaeological walk in 2000, a botanical garden in 2001 and a dinosaur park in November 2009. Architects Arturo Alcocer Martínez and Eduardo Romo de Vivar designed the main building as a twenty-four-sided, four-level polygon meant to evoke an upside-down mine, a reference to the area's silver-mining past. The whole site covers about 15,000 m²; the planetarium is a round building 18 metres across, topped by a dome and wrapped in a spiral staircase, and the dino park spreads over roughly 9,000 m². Indoor galleries cover energy, light and optics, technology, water, the universe, and art with a maker space, plus temporary shows. A mural titled "Municipio libre" greets visitors at the entrance, and a 2014 mural by Armando Peñafiel celebrates science, technology and children. Outside sit a DC-3 airliner, a library and a firefighter-themed station.

How to get to Museo El Rehilete

The museum sits at kilometre 84.5 of Boulevard Felipe Ángeles, the road that carries Federal Highway 85 from Mexico City into Pachuca, so drivers reach it with no detour, just before the city on its south side. From central Pachuca it is about 10 km, roughly 5 minutes in light traffic; from Tulancingo, about 55 km and 50 minutes. Buses to Pachuca leave from Mexico City's Terminal Norte, and Futura and ADO also run from AIFA airport, a ride of about 90 minutes. Within Pachuca, combis running along Boulevard Felipe Ángeles pick up and drop off anywhere on the route for a small fare (often 10 pesos); ask to get off at the museum.
