About Ex Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán
Hueyapan lies on the slopes of Popocatépetl in the north-east of Morelos, between about 2,000 and 2,500 metres up, and its Dominican friary stands just west of the Tepetlayecac ravine, which still carries water from the volcano to the villages below. The name has been read as "beside the great river" and, by INAH, as "over the sacred water". The village belonged to Tetela del Volcán until 1 January 2019, when it became an Indigenous municipality of its own; it is a Nahua community known for woollen gabanes, rebozos and chincuete skirts woven on backstrap looms.
Sources disagree on the dates. A study by INAH's Morelos office says the secular clergy handed the complex to the Dominicans in the 1560s, English Wikipedia gives building work between 1563 and 1573, and a 2026 INAH bulletin calls it founded around 1580-81. Since 1994 it has been one of the Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the humbler friaries on the route: the cloister was built of adobe and timber, decayed and was abandoned, so a visit is mostly the atrium and the church.
In 2012 INAH archaeologists dug along the south side of the cloister and found part of the friars' water system: a probable cistern, two tanks, a channel with sluice gates and stone covers, and the wall that divided the friary from its orchard. Water was taken from the ravine and ran downhill by gravity; the village primary school now stands where the orchard was. Sixteenth-century geographic reports already described the pears, peaches, quinces and figs that ripened here earlier than elsewhere.
The earthquake of 19 September 2017 brought down the dome and left the church severely damaged. After rehabilitation it reopened for worship, and in July 2026 INAH and the local mayordomías agreed to restore, after the 4 August patronal feast, the side altarpiece and statue of Saint Dominic, the figure of Saint Joseph and other pieces. Among the church's treasures is the Nicho de Hueyapan, a 19th-century baldachin made by Higinio López, "the master of Zacualpan".
How to get to Ex Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán
Drive from Atlixco: 40 min, 35 km
Hueyapan is in eastern Morelos, a few kilometres above Tetela del Volcán on the far side of the Amatzinac ravine. The nearest city is Cuautla, about 27 km away as the crow flies: head out toward Yecapixtla and keep climbing on the road through Ocuituco and Tetela del Volcán (allow roughly an hour by car). The 2017 earthquake damaged bridges on both roads into the village, so ask about conditions before you go.
Without a car, get to Cuautla first: Pullman de Morelos runs hourly from Mexico City's Terminal Sur (Taxqueña), about 90 minutes, for 120 to 220 pesos depending on class. From Cuautla continue by local transport or taxi toward Tetela del Volcán and Hueyapan. Atlixco, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, in Puebla, is about 28 km away in a straight line, but the volcano lies in between. It is colder up here than in Cuautla: bring a jacket and check CENAPRED's volcanic alert level before setting out.
