Ignacio Bastida

Until the last century this village was called Santa Catarina Tlayca. Today it carries the name of General Ignacio Bastida Flores, born in Yautepec, who in 1911 joined the Liberation Army of the South under Amador Salazar and went on to command a force of men from his own area. In 1920 he entered the national army, later returned to farming, and was murdered in Yautepec on 5 May 1930; the village's new name is a tribute to him.

It lies in the municipality of Yautepec at 1,292 m above sea level, in the north of the state, and its nearest neighbour is Tlayacapan, about 4 km away, famous for the Augustinian ex-convent of San Juan Bautista and as the origin of the chinelos dance. INEGI's figures show a small village that barely moved for decades: 123 people in 1900, 346 in 1970, 657 in 1980, 1,164 in 2010 and 1,119 in 2020, so it has stopped growing.

The community sits at the foot of the hills around Tlayacapan, in a part of Morelos where most people live off the land, according to Wikipedia (en) on Tlayacapan. For travellers, Ignacio Bastida is not a destination in itself but a point on the Yautepec–Tlayacapan road, which Diario de Morelos reported was being rebuilt in concrete. Use it to see the hills and to continue into Tlayacapan, which does have what visitors look for: the convent, the neighbourhood chapels and the village brass band.
