Lázaro Cárdenas

This Yautepec locality, at about 1,276 metres above sea level, is named after President Lázaro Cárdenas, who governed Mexico from 1934 to 1940; Wikipedia gives this on the strength of INEGI. English Wikipedia adds a second name, El Empalme, which already says something: it is a junction, a point where roads meet.

The census counts 717 residents in 1980, 779 in 1990, 1,246 in 2000, 1,507 in 2010 and 1,503 in 2020, so growth stalled in the last decade. Do not confuse it with the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas in Michoacán, nor with the colonia of the same name in the city of Yautepec: this is a separate village with its own INEGI code (170290025).

On OpenStreetMap the village sits on state road MOR 2 (which joins Yautepec to Oacalco and continues toward Jojutla) and has a petrol station, a primary school, a school named for the president, shops and bars. Oacalco, with its Ingenio Oacalco sugar mill, adjoins it, and the streams Tepecapa and Apanctezalco run a little over a kilometre away. The Mexico 160D toll motorway (La Pera-Cuautla) passes a couple of kilometres off.
