About Diecinueve de Febrero de Mil Ochocientos Doce
The name of this colony is a date. On 19 February 1812 the royalist army of Félix María Calleja began the siege of Cuautla, where José María Morelos had dug in with his insurgents. The siege lasted about 72 days and ended when the insurgents broke out in early May. The colony belongs to the municipality of Cuautla, has postal code 62756 and, in the 2020 INEGI census as recorded on Wikidata, 1,149 residents.
It lies roughly 5 to 6 km north of the centre of Cuautla at about 1,370 m above sea level, along the corridor that links the city with Oaxtepec. The climate is hot and semi-arid (BSh), with an average annual temperature around 21 °C. It has no monuments of its own: it is a district of streets and houses that has grown up against the shopping plazas and housing developments of the main road.
What surrounds it is services. A little over 1 km away are the pulquerías and eateries of Cocoyoc and the taco and pizza stands of Peña Flores, and about 1.6 km off, in Tierra Larga, is the Los Atrios plaza with its chain restaurants. Oaxtepec, with its Dominican ex-convent and park, is about 3 km away as the crow flies. Tlayacapan, one of the state's Pueblos Mágicos, is some 12 km by road.
For a visitor it is mainly a base: a residential colony near the northern edge of Cuautla, handy for a meal or a bed if you are touring the Popocatépetl monasteries.
